Job Description
Position Title: System Administrator
Position Description: The System Administrator , reporting to the Team Leader – Systems Research and Development Unit and to the Team Leader – Earthquake, Tsunami, and Ocean Unit, supports maintenance and monitoring of the computing systems and would be a part of an earthquake and tsunami investigation team that serves watch duty on rotational basis, and contributes to geospatial operations of the Unit.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge:
Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer engineering, information and communication technology, or related field
Experience:
At least 3 years of experience in system administration; experience in computer networking and security; experience in Unix/Linux operating systems environment is a must. Conversant with JavaScript, python, ruby or other scripting languages.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
System development:
Ÿ Upgrading of tsunami Decision Support System (DSS) for automated advisory and bulletin generation, linking PRECISE outputs directly to DSS, and updating inverse function using real-time sea level data
Ÿ Upgrading/ customization of INSPIRE, ESCAPE, ShakeCast and OSFAS systems
Ÿ Development of the Management Information System (MIS)
Ocean information system operations:
Ÿ Assist in ensuring the availability of regular ocean information updates from INCOIS
Ÿ Assist in monitoring buoy positions and in informing country focal points in case of buoy drift
System maintenance:
Ÿ Maintain system efficiency. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying system integrity, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups. Ensure optimum performance of the Local Area Network (LAN), including Internet connectivity, and support users.
Ÿ Maintain network and system security. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
Ÿ Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up.
Ÿ Maintain the tsunami database (archival and retrieval), and systematically organize earthquake, sea level and tsunami data sets
Ÿ Maintain Seiscomp3, Antelope, ShakeCast, PRECISE, INSPIRE, ESCAPE, OSFAS and real-time tsunami simulation and loss estimation (GPGPU) servers
Ÿ Perform performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as may be required. Perform periodic performance reporting
Ÿ Analyze and isolate issues. Troubleshoot problems reported by users.
Ÿ Maintain the tsunami regional facility equipment.
Ÿ Monitor seismic stations and inform country focal points in case of data transmission issues.
Ÿ Identify user needs.
Ÿ Make recommendations for future upgrades
Tsunami watch:
Ÿ Operate the RIMES seismic and sea level monitoring systems, and determine the location, magnitude and tsunami potential of any earthquake occurring in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian regions, according to the Standard Operating Procedure.
Ÿ Prepare and issue tsunami watch to national warning centers of member countries during a tsunami emergency.
Ÿ Ensure that tsunami watches are properly relayed and coordinated with other RTWPs so as to avoid confusion and to complement watches issued by these providers.
Ÿ Recommend schemes and procedures on how to improve the efficiency of data processing activities and tsunami watch processes of the center.
Ÿ Assist in regular drill of staff and seconded scientists.
Others:
Ÿ Assist in the development/maintenance and regular update of the RIMES website.
Ÿ Provide guidance support to RIMES member countries on system related queries, as and when requested.
Ÿ Submit monthly accomplishment reports to the Team Leader – Earthquake, Tsunami, and Ocean Unit, regarding progress and status of assigned tasks.
Ÿ Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the acting Team Leader – Earthquake, Tsunami, and Ocean Unit and Team Leader – Systems Research and Development Unit.
